چکیده

The decay pattern of aftershocks in the so-called 'coherent-noise' models [M. E.] is studied in detail. Analytical and numerical results show that the probability to find a large event at time t after an initial major event decreases as t −τ for small t, with the exponent τ ranging from 0 to values well above 1. This is in contrast to Sneppen und Newman, who stated that the exponent is about 1, independent of the microscopic details of the simulation. Numerical simulations of an extended model [C. Wilke, T. Martinetz, Phys. Rev. E56, 7128 (1997)] show that the power-law is only a generic feature of the original dynamics and does not necessarily appear in a more general context. Finally, the implications of the results to the modeling of earthquakes are discussed.

We study the statistics of optical data transmission in a noisy nonlinear fiber channel with a weak dispersion management and zero average dispersion. Applying path integral methods we have found exactly the probability density functions of channel output both for a non-linear noisy channel and for a linear channel with additive and multiplicative noise. We have obtained analytically a lower bo...

We develop a microscopic model for the interaction of small rare gas clusters with soft X-ray radiation. It is shown that, while the overall charging of the clusters is rather low, unexpectedly high atomic charge states can arise due to charge imbalances inside the cluster. The mechanism does not require unusually high absorption rates, and the heating can be described by standard inverse brems...

We review the history of the parallel tempering simulation method. From its origins in data analysis, the parallel tempering method has become a standard workhorse of physiochemical simulations. We discuss the theory behind the method and its various generalizations. We mention a selected set of the many applications that have become possible with the introduction of parallel tempering and we s...

Numerical simulations of the recently derived fully nonlinear equations of motion for weakly threedimensional water waves [V.P. Ruban, Phys. Rev. E 71, 055303(R) (2005)] with quasi-random initial conditions are reported, which show the spontaneous formation of a single extreme wave on the deep water. This rogue wave behaves in an oscillating manner and exists for a relatively long time (many wa...
